Been having (enjoying) an increasingly heated political discussion - with which other people have now joined in - with a friend of mine on Facebook regarding his recent status update. It's gone on for 2 days so far - splendid. :grin

Anyway, it got me thinking that perhaps we should have a special thread on here for the discussion/debate about the more serious issues of life. And I don't mean a national shortage of chocolate - if that were to happen, we wouldn't need to debate it, you'd just hear me screeching hysterically from across the pond.

Just remember the rules, please, about no racial, homophobic or religiously-intolerant comments. We're talking about healthy, lively debate here, which means no personal attacks, insults or law-breaking. I thank you.

Hmm... :rolleyes Not sure if this will such a good idea after all. The debate on Steve's Facebook page is now not so much heated as incendiary. I bet he wishes he'd just posted a status update about the football results now.

As some of you know, recently I became a member of the homeless population. The holidays are particularly tough on the homeless as they often go without a lot of things they need to survive throughout the year. So I am taking time to ask you to remember those less fortnate then yourself. Danate food or clothing to a local homeless shelter for it always comes back ten fold. :pout

Holy Second Amendment, Batman! :eek

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters ... _shop.html

And he says, "I want people to see me and have a level of comfort..." You have GOT to be kidding! If I saw someone openly carrying a firearm around a store, having ANY level of comfort would not be top of my "feelings" list right then. In fact, my initial shock would swiftly be exchanged for an attempt to break the landspeed record with me trying to get as far away from him as possible.

Level of comfort, my fat butt! :butt

Wandering around shopping and minding my own business would not seem quite so much fun if I knew someone walking near me was carrying a gun.

This should be filed under "WTF??!"

:alien http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11134521

One man, who started his journey in Birmingham, Alabama, was reportedly stopped there because of his "bulky clothing", ABC News reports.

Security staff found one mobile phone taped to a bottle of Pepto-Bismol, three other mobile phones taped together and several watches, also taped together. A box-cutter and three large knives were also found, ABC said.

But the man was cleared for travel, as no explosives were found, the US network said, quoting officials.

"The items were not deemed to be dangerous in and of themselves and, as we share information with our international partners, Dutch authorities were notified of the suspicious items," the US Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.

:confused

"The items were not deemed to be dangerous in and of themselves," they said. So carrying a box-cutter and three big-assed knives is NOT deemed to be dangerous, then? And trying to board a flight with said box-cutter and said big-assed knives is apparently OK, so long as they're not explosive box-cutters and big-assed knives? Since when??

Geez, you could NOT make this shit up! :mad

Well they didn't mention anything about if he had a permit for those weapons to carry onboard a plane.

Perhaps that's why they allowed it?

Usually if you have a permit to carry a hang gun they allow you to carry it.

there's no doubt those items you named that he was carrying along with the bottled pepto bismol were indeed dangerous. I would have to search and see what stipulations airliners have on hand weapons.

especially box cutters, I have a feeling they wouldn't let you carry soemthign like that onboard.

Having a permit to CARRY a handgun is one thing. Allowing you to then carry that weapon on board a plane, in your carry-on luggage, already being aware that you have knives, a box-cutter (who carries a box-cutter when they're travelling??) and mobile phones taped to liquids in your luggage is something else entirely, which I cannot even begin to comprehend.

Saturday is 11th September. This guy should NEVER have been allowed on that plane.
